Key Factors – Which Monofilament Line is Right for Me?

When buying a monofilament line, various factors related to the water being fished as well as the properties of the lines must be considered:

  • Line diameter: As a general rule, the line should be as thick as possible and as thin as necessary. The more obstacles such as weed, wood, mussels, etc. present in the water, the thicker the line should be.
  • For example, if you are fishing at moderate casting distances in small to medium-sized lakes or placing your rigs with a boat up to a maximum of 150 meters, the monofilament carp line can be a bit thicker, between 0.35mm and 0.43mm.
  • If you want to achieve maximum casting distances, the line must obviously be thinner. Here, monolines between 0.28mm and 0.33mm are used. For safety, a 10-meter shock leader should be installed ahead of it.

Sinking Monofilament Lines at a Glance

All monofilament carp lines from reputable manufacturers like Fox, Shimano, or Nash reliably sink. The higher the diameter of the mono line, the better it sinks due to its own weight.

Buying Affordable Mono – Our Value-for-Money Winners

Affordable monofilament lines are already available from €4 per 100m in our shop.
A cost-effective all-rounder is especially the Shimano Technium, available as bulk line for just €3 per 100m and a favorite of many carp anglers for decades.
Standard monofilament lines are fully sufficient for most situations on the water.
Depending on the situation and stress on the line, unlike higher-priced lines, you must accept compromises in stretch and memory, which is why we recommend replacing budget monofilament lines more frequently. As a guideline, once per year is a good rule of thumb.

Our Best Monofilament Lines

High-quality lines from premium manufacturers like Stroft or Korda start at around €6 per 100m.
These monofilament lines typically feature specific specializations such as low stretch, high abrasion resistance, or maximum casting distance. Especially when these properties are essential for your fishing conditions, investing in a premium mono line is worthwhile.

Abrasion Resistance & Robustness of Monofilament Carp Lines

The thicker the monofilament line, the higher the abrasion resistance. In addition to the diameter, different lines from various manufacturers feature additional characteristics.
Here, you can generally say that the stiffer the mono, the more abrasion-resistant it is against obstacles. The material properties and additional coating methods further enhance these factors.

Especially in waters with many obstacles such as weed, wood, or mussels, a particularly robust monofilament line with high abrasion resistance should be chosen.

Breaking Strength/Diameter of Monofilament Carp Lines

The breaking strength of monofilament lines plays a relatively minor role in carp fishing. When using diameters from 0.30mm upwards, the breaking strengths are entirely sufficient for normal fishing.

Only for lines intended for maximum casting distances, where thinner diameters are better suited, should a breaking strength of at least 6kg not be undercut. All lines should be regularly checked for damage to avoid loss of breaking strength.
