How to Find the Right Carp Fishing Tent?

Some key aspects when choosing the right carp tent are certainly the size and capacity. Be aware of what your sessions are going to look like and how much space you'll need for your gear inside the tent. Nothing is more frustrating than having to change your plans spontaneously because you miscalculated space requirements. At the same time, larger tents quickly become more expensive and result in higher weight and packing size, which can limit your transport options and mobility.

Buy your carp tent according to the local weather conditions and always plan for the worst-case scenario – durability and absolute weather resistance are priceless. Know what you can't do without – do you prefer perfect water runoff or do you need optimal ventilation?

These are some of the questions you should ask yourself when choosing the right carp tent for your needs:

  • Where will you mainly be fishing with the carp tent?
  • How long are your sessions usually? Do you fish shorter sessions or are they extended trips?
  • How much space do you need in your new carp tent?
  • How much money are you willing to invest?
  • Do you prefer a specific manufacturer or brand?
  • Should it be a pram hood system, pop-up system or umbrella-style tent?
  • What carp tent accessories do you need?
  • Are you planning sessions during the colder seasons?
  • Are you using a tent heater?

Bivvy vs. Brolly vs. Umbrella Tent

Which carp tent type suits you best can be briefly explained based on their intended use – more details can be found in the respective product categories.

Bivvies are suitable for both overnighters and longer sessions. A carp tent is usually referred to as a bivvy and typically offers full weather protection. Bivvies usually have a door, viewing and ventilation windows at the front – and in some cases also at the rear. Many models allow parts of the front to be removed for maximum flexibility. Carp tents usually include a removable groundsheet. Additional accessories might include overwraps, tent pegs, extensions or inner cabins. Carp tents are available in both 1-man and spacious 2-man versions. All carp tents can also be used for trips abroad or extended sessions. The quality from today’s manufacturers makes carp tents reliable companions in bad weather and ensures long-lasting performance.

Oval umbrellas – or brollies – are often referred to as carp tents mainly designed for short-term usage. Short day sessions, overnighters, or highly mobile fishing are their primary use cases. Oval umbrellas are fishing umbrellas with back ribs that rest on the ground, providing space for a carp bed and tackle. Often they can be upgraded with front panels via zippers, overwraps, storm poles, pegs, and more.

Like oval umbrellas, brollies are known for space-saving angling. They are very quick to set up and take down, offering limited storage for gear such as carryalls, rod bags or cool boxes. Especially for overnighter sessions, brollies are frequently used. Brands like Fox, Nash or Trakker offer their own brolly systems, but it’s also possible to convert oval umbrellas into brollies using dedicated front panels or overwraps. Brollies can usually be quickly opened by removing their front panel. At some waters with strict regulations on carp tents, brollies are often the only allowed form of weather shelter.

Umbrella tents are usually built around a standard fishing umbrella, with an overwrap providing additional protection from wind and weather. A typical fishing umbrella has a diameter of 2.30m to 3.00m. The overwrap is usually placed on top and secured to the ground with pegs. A door can be opened using fixings or closed with a zipper.
