Choosing the Right Rod Length for Your Needs

The length of carp rods is measured in feet (ft). The most common versions are 9ft rods for mobile fishing and stalking, 10ft rods as ideal companions for boat fishing, 12ft rods as true all-rounders, and 13ft rods for optimal long casting. Depending on the waters and the intended style of fishing, the appropriate length should be carefully chosen. That's why many dedicated carp anglers own multiple setups to always have the right gear at hand. For this reason, we also carry 6ft rods, 7ft rods, 8ft rods, and 11ft rods from top brands in our shop to ensure the ideal rod for every situation is available.

Adjusting the Test Curve to Your Requirements

The test curve is indicated in the British unit lb. The higher the pound value, the stronger the rod. There are several standardized test curves ranging from 2.5lb up to 3.75lb. The larger the carp you expect to catch and the heavier the leads you use, the stronger your rods should be.

Rod Sections

Most specialized carp rods are two-piece by default. Fewer sections provide better, more continuous action. However, other factors also play a role.
Are you concerned about transport size? Then three-piece or telescopic rods are practical alternatives. Thanks to advancements in rod design, the differences compared to two-piece rods are now minimal. The latest trend is toward semi-telescopic rods, which combine the best of both worlds. These are two-piece rods, but the butt section is telescopic. The Nash Scope range was a pioneer in offering this semi-telescopic design.

Rod Actions and Their Meaning

Carp rods vary in terms of action depending on the model. Parabolic rods, such as the Century Armalite, offer a full-length bending action down to the handle. They are designed for mid-range casting and maximum fun during the fight. Long-casting rods usually feature a tip action, which means only the final third of the rod flexes – enabling both long and precise casts. Carp rods with a semi-parabolic action combine both tip and parabolic bending, offering a great all-round performance with flex up to the mid-point of the rod.

Modern rod blanks should be made of carbon fiber. The higher the carbon content, the better the quality. Most rods are built from 1K, 2K, or 3K carbon layers that are formed into a blank. When paired with matching 5+1, 6+1, or 7+1 guides, the result is a balanced setup. Caution: For maximum casting distances, a 50mm butt guide should be used as it minimizes friction during the cast.

Carp Rods for Every Budget

Especially for beginners, starting out doesn't always require a high-end carp rod. You can already find quality rods in our shop for around €80. However, you shouldn’t cut too many corners. Very cheap models, which are often made from low-grade materials, can ruin the enjoyment of your new hobby. The saying goes: “Buy cheap, buy twice.” Those who go for entry-level models from well-known brands will almost always make the right choice.

Choosing the Best Affordable Carp Rod – Our Value for Money Winners

Carp rods under €100 are usually all-rounders, meaning they aim to cover a broad range of carp fishing techniques. However, you typically have to compromise on the carbon fiber content of the blank, the guide quality, and the reel seat. Instead of brand components such as the renowned FUJI parts, these rods are often fitted with generic alternatives in this price range.
