In the last few days and weeks it has become clear once again - it's snake season! Especially here in the Rhine floodplains, the little pests sometimes make time by the water a real pain.
It's high time we presented you with our top tips against gnats and other small mosquitoes!
Insect repellent spray
A classic mosquito spray is the first port of call for many outdoor enthusiasts.
A compact size, quick application and a comparatively favourable price speak in favour of the popular brands.
However, the spray, which is applied to the skin, unfortunately also has some disadvantages.
- The effectiveness decreases noticeably over time, especially in the warmer months and in combination with the secretion of sweat
- Direct application to the body can lead to skin irritation in some cases
- The spray is neither odourless nor tasteless - the effects on fishing success are questionable, especially when fishing with natural bait
In the mosquito spray sector, the AttraTec insect repellent in the practical pump spray is our absolute favourite.

Thermacell produces various mosquito repellent products that work in a similar way but serve different target groups.
Thermacell technology offers an effective protection area of around 20 square metres, keeping away up to 98% of mosquitoes and similar blood-sucking insects. Active ingredient plates are used, which are heated with a butane gas (no open flame) and release a repellent substance modelled on nature.
The hand-held devices, for example the Thermacell - MR-450, are designed for single use. The appropriate gas cartridges are integrated into the device so that it can be attached to a belt, for example. This means that even a moving spinning angler can create a protective zone around himself.

Electric mosquito repellent
Portable electric devices, such as the Trakker - Remote Bug Blaster, offer a completely different solution to annoying mosquitoes.
The aim of these devices is not to repel mosquitoes, but to kill them in the immediate vicinity.
A UV lamp is used to attract the mosquitoes to the lamp so that they can then be eliminated by an electric shock.
This type of control is particularly suitable for closed tents and other accommodation.
One disadvantage is the running time of the integrated rechargeable batteries, which can however be easily charged using a USB interface.

However, classic mosquito nets are still the best and most resource-saving alternative.
Both product-specific versions, i.e. extensions and mosquito fronts for bivvys, brollys and the like, as well as universal solutions, such as mosquito nets from MFH, are available on the market.

Conclusion:
Mosquitoes are part and parcel of fishing, especially in spring. However, in order to still enjoy your time on the water, we recommend a mixture of the above-mentioned types of mosquito control.
Our recommendation:
For mobile angling / spin fishing: Thermacell handheld devices and a mosquito spray, which is simply applied to clothing.
For hide and carp fishing:
Thermacell Backpacker and a universal mosquito net
